Populism has distant origins, dating back to ancient Rome... But it is primarily since the 19th century that it has remained, sometimes more hidden, sometimes more visible, in the European political landscape. Today, it appears with unprecedented features, both in its message and its strategy, challenging democracies and taking advantage—at a time when individualism is fueled by the "passion" of resentment—of both temporary difficulties and more structural weaknesses.
